Woven Space: The Evolution of Monumental Liturgical Textiles and Their Role in Shaping the Altar Area (4th–16th c.)
Dr. Julia Matveyeva ist Kunsthistorikerin und Forscherin auf dem Gebiet historischer Textilien mit Spezialisierung auf spätantike, frühchristliche und byzantinische Kunst (4.–16. Jahrhundert).
Ihre wissenschaftlichen Interessen konzentrieren sich auf die Entwicklung liturgischer Textilien und ihre Rolle bei der Gestaltung des sakralen Raumes. Im Mittelpunkt steht das Textil als aktiver Bestandteil historischer Prozesse und als verbindendes Element zwischen Ritual, Architektur und Bild.
Ihre Forschungen beruhen auf einer wechselseitig ergänzenden Analyse der östlichen und westlichen Ausprägungen der christlichen Tradition und berücksichtigen zugleich deren Verbindung zu früheren kulturellen Schichten.
In ihren Arbeiten erschließt sie historische Textilien als wertvolle Wissensquellen, die als verborgene Texte ihrer Epoche gelesen werden können. Die Analyse von Form, Bild, Material und Kontext erlaubt es, Textilien als einen Mediator zu erkennen, der neue Perspektiven für die Erforschung der Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie, rituellen Praktiken und kulturellen Transformationen eröffnet.
Dr. Julia Matveyeva is an art historian and researcher specializing in historical textiles, with a focus on Late Antique, early Christian, and Byzantine art (4th–16th centuries). Her research focuses on the development of liturgical textiles and their role in shaping sacred space. At the center of her work is the textile as an active participant in historical processes and as a connecting element between ritual, architecture, and image. Her research is based on a mutually complementary analysis of the eastern and western expressions of the Christian tradition, while also taking into account their connections with earlier cultural layers. In her work, she approaches historical textiles as valuable sources of knowledge that can be read as hidden texts of their time. The analysis of form, image, material, and context allows textiles to be understood as a mediator that opens new perspectives for the study of art history, philosophy, ritual practices, and cultural transformations.
